Paramount and Taylor Sheridan's is heating up as it sets its release date.
After over a decade of kicking around a potential adaptation of the iconic action game franchise, Paramount partnered with Activision in September 2026 to develop the live-action film. Sheridan, who had shifted to a major deal at NBCUniversal around the same time, signed on to as one of his final film projects under his previous deal with the studio, with frequent Mark Wahlberg helmer Peter Berg also being attached to direct, co-write and co-produce.
As part of the studio's CinemaCon presentation, at which ScreenRant was in attendance, Paramount Pictures announced that the Call of Duty movie is officially hitting theaters on June 30, 2028. In addition to the date, director Peter Berg shared on stage that the adaptation "has a really big scope" and described it as being "something spectacular," while producer and former Activision boss Rob Kostich stated that they were "only going to make a Call of Duty movie if we think it's right."
The Call of Duty movie getting a 2028 release date is a very encouraging sign for multiple reasons. For starters, the studio's confidence in giving it a date now could point to the film's pre-production moving along both smoothly and quickly, potentially even hinting at a proper filming start before the end of the year. However, given Sheridan's busy schedule on everything from his Yellowstone spinoffs to the season 3, they may aim for a 2027 start.
More so, in setting it for a June 2028 date, Call of Duty is already establishing an early heated box office contest. At the time of writing, Warner Bros.' Dynamic Duo, the stop-motion animated DC film centering on the Dick Grayson and Jason Todd incarnations of Robin, is the only film currently also having a June 30 release date, while is scheduled to hit theaters two weeks prior.
With both Call of Duty and Dynamic Duo sure to be targeted at the teenage, action-loving crowds, the box office is likely to explode, while subsequent weeks will see who has the better hold on screen. Given Paramount has built some goodwill with their video game adaptations thanks to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and has in late 2026, if Sheridan and Berg's adaptation similarly lives up to fan expectations, it could further build the studio's success streak.
It is currently unclear whether Sheridan and Berg are making an original story inspired by the 23-year-old action game franchise, or if they will aim to directly adapt one of the titles in it. Sheridan is generally better known for his original writing, though he does have a couple of adaptations in his filmography, namely Michael B. Jordan's Without Remorse, based on Tom Clancy's novel of the same name, and Angelina Jolie's Those Who Wish Me Dead, based on the novel by Michael Koryta, who co-wrote the movie's script with Sheridan.

Berg, on the other hand, is better known for having adapted numerous properties for the screen. From the, which he also turned into a multiple-Emmy-winning series, to co-writing the Jeffrey Dean Morgan-led adaptation of The Losers and the various biographical films led by Wahlberg, beginning with Lone Survivor, he's largely seen success in translating different source material for the screen.
One of the other notable adaptations in Berg's filmography that he and Sheridan are likely not looking to replicate for Call of Duty is . Loosely adapted from the Hasbro board game, and centering on a multinational group of naval warships facing an extraterrestrial threat, the movie was largely ignored by critics and reportedly lost Universal $150 million at the box office. Given Kostich is also assuring that they are aiming to do things right with the Activision franchise, fans of the games are sure to be hopeful that Berg and Sheridan's plans live up to the long wait.
Call of Duty is an upcoming live-action adaptation of the hit military shooter video game series.
