When you think of the 2010s in particular, one of the first shonen franchises that naturally comes to mind is probably Naruto, followed by niche though still successful-for-their-time series like Seven Deadly Sins, Kuroko's Basketball, or perhaps even Sket Dance. That said, one hugely popular shonen franchise that often flies under the radar, especially these days, is Hiro Mashima's .

Despite the series' sequel, 100 Years Quest, having an ongoing manga and , it's been a while since Fairy Tail held the spotlight like it once did. Even though Fairy Tail is often dubbed a "dead fandom" these days, and wrongly so, those who remember the series with fondness also remember the absolute hold the series had on anime fans back in the 2010s. And, after all this time, Fairy Tail is finally making its return.

Fairy Tail's Manga Is Returning After 9 Years

Zeref Fairy Tail

Having debuted in Weekly Shonen Magazine back in 2006, Fairy Tail is in the midst of celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and it looks like this milestone will be one to remember, as after nearly nine long years, Fairy Tail's manga is officially returning. Not 100 Years Quest, but Fairy Tail, the original series that fans know and love.

As per a recent announcement in the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Magazine, Fairy Tail will be returning with a short serialization written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima in Issues #36 and 37, releasing on August 5, 2026. These new chapters will be a filler arc of sorts following Natsu and the rest of Fairy Tail's misadventures amidst a summer festival. The official synopsis for the anniversary release reads: "The summer festival will stir up new trouble for Natsu and his friends!!"

A recent also provides additional details on what to expect from the release: "Also, the short intensive serialization—it's a story focusing on an unexpected character, but Natsu and the gang will be going wild too. And also, there's tons more that hasn't been announced yet. Everyone in the guild, let's get hyped together!" Given that Mashima has only been handling the writing for 100 Years Quest with Atsuo Ueda handling the art, it will surely be special to see Fairy Tail illustrated by Mashima once again, in his oh-so-unforgettable style. And, hopefully, Kodansha will be quick to localize the new chapters for Fairy Tail's loyal and very nostalgic fans around the world.

Fairy Tail Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary With Nostalgic Tribute

Fairy Tail

has been celebrating its 20th anniversary in more ways than one, as, besides the very exciting news about the manga's return, the series also recently shared a touching tribute featuring the anime's first-ever opening, "Snow Fairy," by Funkist. Much like Black Clover, Fairy Tail is also known to have countless amazing anime openings, though nothing quite beats "Snow Fairy" simply due to how nostalgic it is. And, this nostalgia hits fans harder than a truck in Fairy Tail's newest anniversary promo, which beautifully edits together familiar scenes from the manga against the unforgettable lilting tune. It might be a little too soon to hope for a Fairy Tail revival just yet, but with the as of late, a Fairy Tail remake would single-handedly project the series back into the spotlight like it never left. image large
