You’re at your most dangerous when you feel cornered, and at your most human when you realize that all the power in the world can’t make someone genuinely love you. You’re terrified most of the time, but you show up anyway. That’s not weakness — that’s the definition of bravery. You fumble, you doubt, but you never quit. Anxious Resourceful Moral Brave 🌸 Kimiko “You are my heart.” You’ve been through horrors that would destroy most people, and yet here you are — still fighting, still caring, still protecting the ones you love. You don’t need words to communicate what matters; your actions say everything. In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, Crawford, who plays the Deep, explained how his character really feels about Homelander after the Seven were disbanded in The Boys season 5, episode 7. The series star revealed that the Deep finally understood Homelander never really cared about him, something that completely shatters his worldview given how loyal he'd been for such a long time. His exile from the ocean adds to that level of pressure, since without the Seven, he now has nowhere to go and nobody to turn to:
ScreenRant: The Deep is obviously horrified by the death of all this ocean life, but he was the one actively endangering them in the first place by lying about the pipeline. Then in episode 7, after having killed his only friend in the Seven, Homelander still kicks him out and ocean life spurns him. Was there a moment before that breaking point where he considered what he was doing? Did he ever want to take a different path?
Chace Crawford: Yeah, I think we all start to pray to God in the foxhole when things are really bad. You want to make a change. I think the Deep's problem is, "Oh, I'm ready to change. I will do it," and then he stays the way he's always been.
I think when he sees this, he just doesn't know how to go about it. He's so stupid. He really thinks he can maybe talk Homelander into giving him the Seven and redeeming himself that way, because that's his whole life and identity. He's just really desperately clinging onto it, and he has been for the past three seasons. He's trying to appease Homelander and be a sycophant. He's just hanging on to the fast life that he's got and trying not to lose that.
I think the big realization of that episode is that Homelander doesn't love him. He's chasing this ghost of a relationship with him, and he's been in denial his whole life. It's finally cracking, and he's having to face real consequences in real life. To lose the ocean and the love of the sea life was his biggest kick in the nuts. Yeah, poor Deep.
In addition, Crawford explained how the Deep has a "father complex" that Homelander satiates, something that slowly starts to crack after the Seven are officially dissolved. It's an approach that shows how, despite how much the Deep has sacrificed — from sea life to his best friend in Black Noir — it was never going to be enough to satisfy the person he wanted to impress the most. However, he does admit it's likely fun watching his character get hit with consequences for everything he's done all at once, forced to wrestle with the aftermath of his decisions:
I think he finally starts to see some things [about Homelander]. To see the cracks in Homelander is probably kind of scary. It's like seeing your dad be completely humbled and not be The Man all the time.
I think it's just all around terrifying for the Deep, who's just trying to survive and not to lose what he's got left. He's just very angry, and I think that deep down, he's got this rage that he hasn't dealt with. He's obviously done no therapy, and he's just got all these unresolved issues, like a father complex with Homelander.
The one thing he wants Homelander to say, he will never say it to him. He'll never have this love and acceptance or ride off into the sunset with Homelander as his teammate. The walls are crumbling, and it's sad for him. But it's probably fun for the audience!
Homelander dismissing the Deep of his duties is the first of many unfortunate moments for the aquatic Supe in season 5, episode 7. Abandoned by every other , he finds himself on a dock where a hammerhead shark warns him he's no longer allowed in the ocean, otherwise he'll be killed. This results in him allowing a man to drown, since he's too afraid of his own self-preservation to take the risk and save him.
was the catalyst for many of these events. While he did so because Noir destroyed the oil pipeline that killed billions of sea animals, it was an extreme action spurred by his wishes to always please Homelander above everyone else. He sacrificed their friendship for the validation of someone who didn't care about him, leading to his downfall. The fact he finally sees Homelander for who he is, however, is too little too late, especially after everything he's done just to stay by his side.

This lays the groundwork for a rather depressing yet fitting end for the Deep, whose fate just might circle back to when he assaulted Starlight in the very first episode of the entire series. It's an approach that gives his character arc more meaning, especially now that he doesn't have anything left to lose. The Boys might finally be setting up the Deep's untimely end, either dying or having to live with everything he's done.
