Paramount has confirmed the franchise's movie future, who've revealed new details about the sci-fi series' next chapter. Rumblings of have been making the rounds since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, continuing the story of the Kelvin Timeline. However, nothing definitive had been confirmed regarding the franchise's future.
Now, while presenting at CinemaCon, Paramount officially confirmed that a new Star Trek movie is in the works. While details are sparse, the studio is determined to bring the franchise back to the big screen after quite some time away, offering up a new story for fans of its decades-long history. More will be revealed in the future.
Since the release of Star Trek Beyond, the franchise has been relegated to the small screen, starting with the release of Star Trek Discovery in 2017. However, the idea for another movie in either Star Trek timeline had still been floating around, including a direct sequel in the Kelvin Timeline. But the potential of this remains unknown.
Development of a potential new Star Trek movie has included big names attached, including Quentin Tarantino, S.J. Clarkson, Noah Hawley, and Matt Shakman. However, none of these projects ever saw the light of day. After the merger between Paramount and Skydance, it was optioned not to continue the Kelvin timeline and instead start from a different point.
