's Sydney Sweeney mystery has finally been answered.
When the high-profile sequel was filming in New York City, many pictures were taken around the set, including one of an individual with a hoodie on who was reportedly Sweeney. This has led to speculation that the popular actress and model is part of alongside Justin Theroux, Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, B.J. Novak, and Lady Gaga, none of whom were in the original film.
In ScreenRant's interview with Liam Crowley for The Devil Wears Prada 2, writer Aline Brosh McKenna was asked about Sweeney reportedly being on set and whether she ever had a role in the movie. McKenna confirms that Sweeney is not in the final cut of the film but does not address whether there was originally a role for her. Check out McKenna's comments below:
ScreenRant: Like I said, in New York, so I see a lot of things. I thought I caught Sydney Sweeney on sets when you guys were filming. Am I mistaken in saying that?
Aline Brosh McKenna: There were a lot of photos from the set of various people. And then there were those memes, where it was like, "So-and-so is in the movie. So- and-so is in the movie." It became a running joke about who people had seen on set and were in the movie. It was one of the first ways actually, that I knew that we were sort of piquing people's interest because there was constant... It became like, first, people were really speculating, and then people were just being silly.
ScreenRant: So can I ask, was Sydney originally in this film?
Aline Brosh McKenna: Well, you saw the movie. She's not in the movie.
ScreenRant: She's not in the final cut.
Aline Brosh McKenna: Yes.
ScreenRant: So, was she a character written possibly for the third movie, if there's going to be one?
Aline Brosh McKenna: Don't know. I would do a hundred movies with this cast. I would do any kind of movie.
David Frankel: We're not getting ahead of ourselves here.
Aline Brosh McKenna: I would do a James Bond movie. I would do an action movie. I'd do whatever they want.
This confirms that Sweeney is not in The Devil Wears Prada 2, even in a brief cameo, and aligns with a when she said "I don't know what you're talking about" in response to her being on set. However, McKenna's comments do not completely rule out the possibility of Sweeney being featured in an earlier iteration of the film or her starring in a potential third installment. For now, though, McKenna and director David Frankel are understandably focused on the sequel coming out instead of expanding into a trilogy.
Despite Sweeney's stardom, the long-awaited sequel has plenty of star power on its own with a returning cast that includes Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling, and Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton. The aforementioned Theroux, Branagh, Ashley, Liu, Novak, and Lady Gaga add to this as well. The Devil Wears Prada 2's story brings Andy back to Runway to help Miranda as Streep's character faces off against Emily in the fashion industry, all while dealing with the evolving world of digital media.
have it grossing approximately $66 million over the three-day period of its domestic opening weekend. If the projections are correct, the sequel would earn more than double the original's $27.5 million during its domestic opening weekend. Even with uncertainty about Sweeney, the rampant set photos and box office expectations indicate a high level of interest in the film. It also bodes well for a third movie happening if Frankel, McKenna, Hathaway, Streep, and other key figures want to move forward with one.
While Sweeney isn't in The Devil Wears Prada 2, she has plenty of other current and upcoming projects. She reprised the role of Cassie Howard for HBO's , which is in the midst of releasing new episodes, and she played Millie in The Housemaid, which was a massive box office success and is now a streaming hit on Starz. She will be playing Millie again in the sequel The Housemaid's Secret, is attached to Netflix's live-action Gundam movie, and is portraying Undine Spragg in a film adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel Custom of the Country.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 releases in theaters on May 1.
