Sylvester Stallone's classic is being remade for television.
The crime thriller is notable for being the first time that Stallone and Robert De Niro shared the screen together. It was released in August 1997, with the emerging James Mangold as director and writer to tell the story of who clashes with corrupt New York City police officers.
The movie received positive reviews and grossed $63.7 million worldwide against a $15 million budget. It was the first of many successes for the five-time Oscar nominee Mangold, who would go on to be known for films such as the musical drama Walk the Line, Hugh Jackman's Logan, and the recent biopic A Complete Unknown.
reports that a television remake of 1997's Cop Land is in the works, with Mangold set to return to one of the earliest films in what has since become a storied career behind the camera. In his return to television after almost a decade, Mangold is set to co-write, direct, and executive produce the adaptation for Paramount Television Studios and Miramax Television.
Robert Levine, who recently worked on , will serve as co-writer and showrunner. He'll also executive produce alongside Mangold. The project would mark Mangold's first credit as a writer for a television series, and it stems from the recent overall deal that he signed with Paramount Pictures last September.
Cop Land's cast also included Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, and Cathy Moriarty.
News of its TV adaptation dates back to April 2026, when it was reported that Miramax, which distributed the 1997 film, was looking to make use of its impressive history as a way of reestablishing itself in Hollywood after the sexual assault revelations against co-founder Harvey Weinstein. Other titles mentioned included popular movies such as and the romance drama Chocolat.
In any case, the planned Cop Land series stands out as the most high-profile collaboration between Paramount and Miramax Television so far. It's worth noting, as well, that Paramount owns 49% of Miramax and is still looking at developing other titles from Miramax's library.
Stallone and De Niro would go on to work together once more, leading that served as a playful nod of sorts to their respective roles in Rocky and Raging Bull. But it is Cop Land that has the richer legacy, helping to launch a top-tier filmmaker in a project that he'll now revisit.
