David Boreanaz's TV return in is delayed to 2027.

After , it's NBC's turn to announce what the cycle schedule will look like. This week is a big one for the Peacock-branded network, as many of its major scripted shows end their respective years. That includes the One Chicago franchise, Law & Order: SVU season 27, as well as Law & Order season 25. Amid all that chaos, NBC also chose this week to confirm its 2026-2027 schedule, which will be a mix of old and new shows.

There are several additions to NBC's portfolio after it ends the 2026-2026 TV cycle. Among them are the Peter Krause-led series, Line of Fire, Jake Johnson's Sunset PI, and Téa Leoni and Tim Daly's Newlyweds. That said, arguably the most-buzzworthy from the bunch is Boreanaz's The Rockford Files reboot, which will mark the actor's return to traditional broadcasting since SEAL Team ended its run in 2026. Following James Garner's original that premiered in 1954, the revival will see Boreanaz as James Scott "Jim" Rockford, a newly-pardoned wrongfully-convicted felon-turned-private investigator.

Lisa Katz, president of scripted content at NBC & Peacock, explained (via ) that the reason for delaying The Rockford Files is simply due to scheduling limitations. They really wanted the series for an 8 PM slot, and they didn't have any left in fall 2026. Read her full quote below:

“I think also, as Jeff said, we think ‘Rockford’s’ a great 8 p.m. show, and we didn’t have an 8 p.m. time period in the fall. So it’s an opportunity to put it where we think it’ll get the biggest and best audience.”

NBC has also revealed the . Originally, Boreanaz shared the show's version of the character's iconic business cards, confirming that work has officially started for the series. Subsequently, the network shared official images of the actor in character, further driving up the hype for the series. Whether there's a hidden twist in The Rockford Files reboot, similar to CBS's take on Matlock, is unclear at this point.

Beyond holding the show for the midseason, what makes The Rockford Files' schedule more interesting is NBC's commitment to slotting it at 8 PM ET. This block is usually reserved for high-profile shows, which makes sense, considering who's attached to The Rockford Files. Even during its development, it was among the most talked-about new shows on the network. However, shows opening primetime tend to be less serious and dark compared to projects released later in the night.

It's also interesting to know how NBC will position The Rockford Files in terms of other shows with similar themes. Johnson's Sunset PI comes from the same network and is billed more as a comedy, so it might be able to intentionally differentiate between the projects. That said, ABC's RJ Decker shares a lot of foundational storytelling elements with Boreanaz's series. It will be interesting if they will directly compete against each other next year.
