The fourth season of Mike White's HBO series a little over a week ago, with its France-set story set to take place during the Cannes Film Festival. Filming will take place in St. Tropez, Monaco, Cannes, and Paris, though the story will stay in the French Riviera. Helena Bonham Carter was one of the first to join the cast of The White Lotus season 4, which has gathered one of its largest rosters of stars yet.
Now, per , Bonham Carter has exited The White Lotus season 4. Her character will be recast once White rewrites the story centered around her. It is reported that, when filming began, White felt that the character was not aligning with what he had originally conceived, which ultimately led to the decision to rewrite the role and recast the actress, as the character Carter was set to portray is reportedly central to season 4's story. In a statement, an HBO spokesperson said:
With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.
Filming is expected to continue as White retools the season, with schedules shifting so that production can focus on other characters. White writes and directs every episode of The White Lotus and has been acclaimed for his singular vision.
The rest of cast includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, and Nadia Tereszkiewicz.
