Nine years after was released, producer Will Packer just revealed a major new update about the sequel.
During a wide-ranging interview with , Packer revealed that he and the rest of the creative team "are closer than we've ever been" to making Girls Trip 2, especially now that the script is finished. Not only does the producer feel that the script is in good shape, but it's also been shared with the cast.
The reason it's taken this long to develop the sequel is that a lot of "time, care and energy" is needed to get it right. After all, he has said that he'd rather not create than to "do it incorrectly." While Packer isn't able to announce a release date yet, he wanted to assure audiences that he is "hard at work" on the sequel "because it's the thing that I get asked about the most."
"I certainly hope so. We are closer than we’ve ever been. I’ve always said, I’d rather not do it than do it incorrectly. So a lot of time, care and energy have gone into the story. We now have a script that we feel pretty good about. We’ve shared it with the ladies. We’re all in this extremely hilarious group chat that Tiffany Haddish runs. She is definitely the loudest and proudest in that group chat. She keeps us all entertained. But we’re getting close. I can’t give a specific date or release or anything like that, but I am hard at work on it because it’s the thing that I get asked about the most."
After Girls Trip was released, Packer went on to produce shows and movies like Being Mary Jane, Night School, , Little, Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, and the upcoming rom-com You, Me & Tuscany, which arrives in theaters on April 10. He also produced the 94th Academy Awards, which was co-hosted by Girls Trip star Regina Hall as well as Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes.
Girls Trip brought together an all-star cast that included Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mike Colter, Larenz Tate, Kate Walsh, Mike Epps, Kofi Siriboe, Deborah Ayorinde, Lara Grice, and Tonea Stewart. The film centers on a friend group that has drifted apart over the years, with Hall's character, Ryan Pierce, organizing a reunion at the Essence Music Festival. The by Maxwell, Ne-Yo, New Edition, Missy Elliott, and Aretha Franklin.
After its theatrical release in July 2017, Girls Trip went on to gross $140 million at the box office against a reported $19 million budget. Domestically, the comedy earned $115 million, making it the first Black-led and Black-directed/produced/written film to reach $100 million.
Not only did moviegoers gravitate to Girls Trip, which was written by and First Wives Club creator Tracy Oliver, but the movie also received overwhelming praise from critics, with a Certified Fresh rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
At the NAACP Image Awards, Girls Trip won Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (Haddish). The comedian also won Outstanding Supporting Actress and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance (Female) at the Black Reel Awards.
