Latin America is showing its love for .

The Wednesday star boasts of both Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, and has spoken about wanting to honor her cultural heritage while being a positive force for Latino representation in Hollywood. Ortega's biggest breakthrough in the latter regard has been her performance as a Latina Wednesday Addams on Netflix’s hugely popular Addams Family-inspired series. The recent resurgent streaming performance of a less-heralded Ortega project sees one of her family’s nations of origin showing her some appreciation right back.

came and went with barely a whisper when it skipped theatrical after a festival premiere back in 2026, but the Taylor Sheridan-produced crime movie starring Ortega as a small-time drug dealer is currently making a comeback on streaming, hitting the top 10 on Paramount+’s global movies chart for April 30, 2026.

The list of markets consuming Finestkind at a higher-than-average clip is headed up by Mexico, the country where Ortega’s great-grandmother was born. The film’s #8 ranking in that country is matched in no fewer than 14 other markets, leading to an average ranking of 8.2. #8 is indeed the peak for Finestkind, which also places #10 in Colombia and Uruguay.

The movie’s producer Sheridan happens to have his own film-related Mexican connection, having penned the scripts for both Sicario and its sequel Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Finestkind was written and directed by Brian Helgeland based in part on his own experiences as a fisherman, but never received a wide theatrical release, being sent straight to Paramount+ on December 15, 2026.

Critics found the Ortega-starring crime thriller less-than-fine, sending it to a poor 27% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers had praise for some of the , including Ben Foster and Tommy Lee Jones, but found the story lacking in coherence and the tone too vacillating, with some dismissing the film as boring and overwrought.

Ortega did receive generally good responses for her own performance, which many critics singled out as one of the film’s few positives. Unfortunately, Finestkind overall ranks as one of the star’s worst-reviewed projects, with only 2026’s Hurry Up Tomorrow getting a lower RT score.

The movie’s co-producer Gary Foster spoke in a 2026 interview about the good fortune the film experienced in snagging Ortega to star just as she was about to blow up (via ). “I remember having a conversation with the studio and saying, ‘Look, she’s got Scream whatever-number coming out and then Wednesday, and The Fallout,’ which both of us thought was just an incredible film, and she gave a fabulous performance.

One, Brian [Helgeland] has to believe that she’s right for the part, but two, from a commercial standpoint, you make a bet, and you hope that those films and the series, Wednesday, were gonna take off.”

Scream and Wednesday did take off for Ortega, whose presence in Finestkind is perhaps the biggest reason the movie is currently enjoying a small streaming resurgence.
