Animation lovers are about to get a special treat on streaming.
A select few producers and distributors dominate the animated world by and large, one of which is Disney. Disney and its superstar subsidiary Pixar tend to top the end-of-year box office and critics' lists for animation. Already this year, , a critically acclaimed original that has made over $370 million at the worldwide box office.
Now, has officially announced that GOAT will be arriving on their streaming platform. The animated film arrives on Netflix in just a couple of weeks, taking on the United States on May 14. The streamer promoted the film by touting that it is "starring THE Caleb McLaughlin," referencing the Stranger Things star voice acting the lead role.
Originally released in February, GOAT is the latest feature from . While not nearly as big an animation giant as Disney, Sony has been behind some well-respected movies in the animation world, including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. GOAT's trailer and publicity materials touted this connection.
Taking a departure from the comic book adaptation universe, Sony crafted an unlikely hero story in GOAT. Protagonist Will Harris is a small goat with big dreams of becoming a professional basketball — or in this universe, "roarball" — player. On his path to fame, Will has to confront some of the most physically domineering species along the way.
February is typically slow at the box office, but this did not stop GOAT from roaring past some key milestones. The film crossed the $100 million mark domestically, and a decent showing overseas brought its worldwide total to $190.5 million.
And while critics may not have felt it lived up to the greatest-of-all-time promise of the title, GOAT garnered a decent response as well. The film had an 85% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, including a 7 out of 10 star . Audiences liked it even better, giving it a 93%.
The film was boosted in no small part by NBA player-turned-film producer Stephen Curry. Curry has been quietly transitioning from sports to the film world over the past few years. Other than GOAT, he also produced and directed the Sundance documentary short The Baddest Speechwriter of All, which was released earlier this year.
In addition to GOAT's connection with Curry and Sony, the film is also by the animation team behind KPop Demon Hunters. That 2026 worldwide sensation was one of Netflix's biggest hits of all time. This bodes well for GOAT's staying power as it hits the streaming platform in a couple of weeks.
