Paramount has provided an update on the video game sequel at CinemaCon, 11 months before it zooms into theaters. The will see Team Sonic meet a new ally, Amy Rose (Kristen Bell), alongside a new foe, Metal Sonic. The movie is set for release on March 19, 2027.

Now, Paramount has a new sizzle reel at CinemaCon, which includes quick footage of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The teaser revealed a look at Jim Carrey's return as Robotnik, who says, "Robotnik...saves...world!," and Kristen Bell's Amy Rose. While the teaser was short, it confirms Carrey will be coming back as the same Robotnik from previous movies.

confirmed the appearance of Amy and Metal Sonic in the forthcoming installment. While not much is known about the movie's story, there's a high probability it'll be pulled from Sonic CD, Amy and Metal Sonic's 1993 debut video game. However, it's unclear if other elements of the game, like the Time Stones, will be involved.

The sizzle reel confirms that, despite his supposed death at the , Robotnik will be coming back in the fourth installment. The fact that he talks about having saved the world signals there's no alternate dimensions or time travel at play here: the Robotnik seen in the fouth movie will be the one from the previous films.

Although it's unclear how he survived, the footage signals he's going to be a big part of the story moving forward. He'll be joined by other returning actors, too, including Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Keanu Reeves as Shadow, James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, and Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone.

Newcomers to the include Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, alongside undisclosed roles for Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman, Matt Berry, and Richard Ayoade. Kingsley and Offerman are confirmed to have voice roles, though there's no word yet on who will be portraying Metal Sonic.

The movie appears to be a big step for the franchise, which Paramount is planning to expand beyond the title character. An untitled Sonic spinoff movie is also in the works, with a scheduled release date of December 22, 2028. It's unclear what this new movie will be about, but does signal Paramount has many large-scale plans for the franchise.

As far as Robotnik's involvement, his talk about saving the world makes it unclear if he's going to be a hero or a villain this time around. While he helped Sonic defeat his grandfather, Gerald, in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, he may still have plans for world domination — saving the world so he can rule it. But it remains to be seen if that's really the case.

Couple his comedic appearance in the CinemaCon footage with his threatening voiceover from Sonic the Hedgehog 4's trailer, and it wouldn't be surprising if the sequel sets him up as the primary antagonist yet again. However, whether Metal Sonic has his own plans or not remains to be seen, and is something the movie can explore once it arrives in theaters.
