A day may come when a LOTR casting choice upsets former star, Viggo Mortensen... but not this day! Director and star Andy Serkis revealed Mortensen's "thrilled" about Jamie Dornan being recast as Aragorn, a.k.a. Strider. We are thrilled that Jamie's doing it. I mean, we're, you know, we're absolutely thrilled. And, by the way, so is Viggo.
"Oh, good, seal of approval, that means a lot," Horowitz replied, with Serkis adding, "100 percent."
When asked about Mortensen's decision not to reprise the role, Serkis opted not to discuss casting, telling Horowitz he wanted to save that for "further down the line."
Dornan's, during Warner Bros.' panel, with the film set to explore a new story within Middle-earth. Serkis previously teased the casting in a conversation with ScreenRant ahead of the 2026 convention, telling Liam Crowley, simply: "Let's just say we are recasting the role, and we are on the way to finding someone."
In addition to Sméagol, Warner Bros. revealed that Ian McKellen will be back as Gandalf, with Kate Winslet taking on the role of Marigol, Leo Woodall as Halvard, Lee Pace as Thranduil, and Elijah Wood as Frodo.
Regarding the film itself, Serkis was also relatively mum, is going to "be a big ride."
Our film is situated between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and it's The Hunt for Gollum, and it is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself. So we're just about on the launchpad now, and it's very exciting. And yeah, it's going to be a big ride.
He also shared some BTS tidbits about filming, which is about to kick off, including getting the original Lord of the Rings team back together for the film, which he described as very much grounded in "Peter Jackson's trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy."
I mean, the entire Lord of the Rings team who worked on the originals are reassembled for a start. So it is grounded in the lore, the world, and the vision of Peter Jackson's trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy. So it will feel like a proper Middle-earth film, there's no question, but there is a much more, as I say, a much more internal, psychological investigation into one of Tolkien's most complex characters, i.e., Golum. So it's a very interesting mix, and I think it is a tightrope for sure, but it'll certainly feel like ... I mean, a lot of the filmmaking techniques are ones which we are employing, which harken back to the first trilogy. So I think it'll be a great marriage of a new story and an intimate story within the law and world of Middle-earth that we all love, and the fans ... But you've got to remember that for some people, this will be their first Middle-earth film. So that's why it's been such an interesting journey.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to release on December 17, 2027.
